WCC & GNS Earthquake Briefing- 7:30pm, Wednesday September 19 (Kelburn Normal School Hall, Kowhai Rd)
Wellington City Council is hosting a series of community briefings with GNS Science to talk about earthquakes. A briefing for residents living in Kelburn and surrounding areas will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday 19 September at Kelburn Normal School, 16 Kowhai Rd. The briefings are designed to give you a better understanding of the earthquake risk to our city.

Wellington has already experienced four significant earthquakes since 1840. Our city survived those quakes with minimal casualties. We’ll talk about what we’ve learned from these events, what we’re learning from the Canterbury earthquake sequence and what we know from recent GNS Science research.
The briefings will give you an overview of what has already been done to make our city safer and the work we have planned to improve our infrastructure’s resilience. You’ll also find out more about what you can do to make sure you and your family are ready for an earthquake and have the opportunity to talk to our experts about earthquake issues over a cup of tea afterwards.

GWRC - Wellington City Bus Review meeting 15 May 2013 - report from CVRA representative Philippa Doyle
I attended the meeting on Wednesday 15th with representatives from the Greater Wellington Regional Council. There were also representatives for the Highbury Residents and Wilton Residents Assns there, along with two Regional Councillors, Chris Laidlaw and Paul Bruce, and Wgtn City Councillor Andy Foster.

The council reps presented an update on where thinking is at with the proposed changes to bus services and provided draft timetables for feedback. A copy of the presentation is attached.

The big issue for our area is the proposal to cancel the 13 bus route which runs at morning and evening peak hour providing an express service up to Northland via Glenmore St rather than going through Kelburn. Both the Wilton rep and I raised concerns about this proposal which the Council was very receptive to. They said they have received more submissions about the 13 bus than any other changes so undertook to relook at it and see what can be done.

They have invited both the Wilton rep and i to meet with them again in two weeks to discuss the issue further and to look at some alternative proposals. It was a very good meeting where we felt our concerns were listened to and that all Council staff were prepared to reconsider what was proposed to ensure the needs of the community are met. I am quietly confident that the 13 bus route can be saved.

It should be noted that there will be no changes to the current bus services until 2015 so this is all some way off yet.

If any members have other issues that they would like raised regarding the bus proposals or timetables I'd be happy to take these to my next meeting with the council. [Please email any suggestions to CVRA.]

Here is our submission on the Long-Term Plan.

Creswick Valley Neighbours Day BBQ - 25 March 2012
Over 80 locals brought their sausages, lentil patties and punch to a community BBQ to celebrate Neighbours Day Aotearoa. Neighbours Day is a national campaign that encourages kiwis to get to know their neighbours and turn streets into neighbourhoods and resilient places to live. Anne Bartlett and the team from Karori Garden Centre kindly hosted the event.

We enjoyed lots of hearty discussion while the kids scoured the plants for Easter eggs, which were well hidden by Kristin. It wasn’t all play, we also gathered some great ideas on how we can prepare our neighbourhood to be resilient in a disaster and we’re now working on a disaster readiness plan.

You can see photos on our Facebook page. - Anne and the team at Karori Garden Centre have moved and become Thorndon Green Gardens at 248 Thorndon Quay. We will miss having them in the neighbourhood and will soon welcome KinderCare to this site.
